It’s a specific, underlying idea that we’ve pitched here and there, without really putting a name to the concept… the idea that the players who are often seeing the most improvement aren’t the ones who train the hardest, but they’re the ones who have a genuine curiosity about whats happening when things are going wrong or right, and they’re honest enough with themselves to investigate that further.

You might not think about it in this context, but that habit of investigating this sort of thing in your training is a skill in its own right. Like any other skill, you can develop it further with deliberate effort. We, as gamers, are often more reactive than we realize… we react to a bad match, a bad training session, or a low score instead of interrogating it and getting to the bottom of it.

This is even further compounded when you’re just jumping into another playlist or requeuing for another match, and all of that potential data just drifts away. So let’s explore how we can be more proactive with it and develop the habit of investigation.

Handling External Feedback

Alright, we’ll start off with the heavy stuff. External feedback, or criticism from others, be it from a coach or a teammate, be it a random in the queue or a long-term partner, or even an enemy in all chat. For better or worse, that’s going to be one of the most common ways you’ll hear feedback about your play.

We’ve trained ourselves to often drum that kind of feedback out, and for good reason, oftentimes it can be a lot of pointless static, but it helps to filter the feedback whenever possible. Who said it? Could it have possibly been in good faith? Even if it was said in bad faith, what’s a better way to shake off some chat PVP than to take it as constructive criticism and handle it in a healthy way? The important part is to understand that there’s a real difference between listening to criticism and actually investigating it further.

You can filter this pretty quickly with some simple questions, such as asking what you actually missed. What did they notice that you overlooked? Is this an identifiable pattern or just a one-off thing they identified? If they give you some toxic remark, then we can go back to writing it off and moving on, but if they give you valuable feedback, whether they are a friend or a foe, there’s something worth exploring.

The further benefits here are in learning the cause of a symptom, and sometimes you’ll only learn that through a fresh set of eyes and those follow-up questions. Even if you can correct a behavior, you might not have corrected a deeper cause that is generating other errors in your game, and that investigative step is what helps us uncover those deeper causes.

Now, this might not be easy, and we’re not going to lie and tell you it is. You have to be vulnerable in an environment that can be pretty cutthroat, vicious, and mean-spirited, but we can find our own value down there… and we can recycle that trash into building materials.

Practicing Self Assessment

We can apply that same investigative habit with ourselves when no one else is in the room or on the server. We’ve all been there after a rough session where we can’t close the game fast enough. Hey, some of us might even be dramatic enough to uninstall just to reinstall shortly after. The more productive behavior is to find the positive data that we can use after that torture session, so we’re still walking away with something valuable.

Start to think of the sorts of questions that someone might actually notice while watching you as a third-party… are you consistently missing a certain kind of shot or in a certain direction? Are you over or underflicking consistently, or do you find your crosshair drifting over time? Are you re-peeking the same angles over and over, only to get punished? Are you setting yourself up for success in your position?

These are easy things you can identify on your own with a bit of tape work, even skimming through some replays can surface some of those answers, but there’s even deeper data you can explore. Does your performance improve or decline as the session goes longer? You may be fatiguing yourself without even realizing it… These might not even be mechanical issues to be drilled out, but simple adjustments to make, or habits to be aware of.

We don’t always need another voice to suggest these things to us, we just have to be open-minded enough to look into them, ask those questions, and then have the honesty to dig enough to find that answer.

Are We Asking Good Questions?

Some questions that come to mind will be pretty surface level, which is alright, but those questions are less likely to truly get to the bottom of an issue. They might get the ball rolling, in terms of your thought process, but think bigger and more actionable. You can start with something like “How did I do?” but that’s pretty broad. A better question would be something more in line with “Where was my crosshair when I missed those key shots? What led me to positioning there? Where was my head at, and could I have read that situation better with the information I had available?

Think about it like this: the more specific the question, the more functional the answer can be. A vague question is likely to lead to a broad answer, which doesn’t really fit the investigative goal we’re shooting for. The more specific questions about specific moments or situations are the ones that will produce actionable data. Gradually, as you get more comfortable with this process, those specific questions will come more easily and faster, as you’ve calibrated the thinking model we’re working on. Most importantly, you have to be willing to actually look at those answers, even if they’re disappointing. It’s perfectly alright to be disappointed with a bad habit… what matters most is what we do about it.

Are you asking yourself the right questions after a tough training session or a bad match?
