Your sessions start feeling less productive, and it feels more like a grind where you&#8217;re just going through the motions. It&#8217;s easy to sit back and look at this trend and think to yourself that you may have hit the ceiling, or even potentially backslide a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s not be hasty and flip the chessboard and overhaul your entire training process. Instead, let&#8217;s interrogate the situation first and get to the bottom of the issue. Start by determining whether you&#8217;ve actually plateaued or if you&#8217;re just in a performance valley. Both of these things will feel pretty similar when you&#8217;re in the barrel, but there are some significant differences, and the way you respond is going to matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-a-performance-valley\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What IS A Performance Valley?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great question! A performance valley is a temporary experience&#8230; It&#8217;s that natural, messy aspect of any skill improvement or acquisition where you&#8217;re integrating something new into your toolkit and hit a rocky stretch. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aimlabs.com\/articles\/aimlabs\/outcome-dependency-stop-judging-your-performance-by-the-scoreboard\/\">You&#8217;ll notice your task scores start to level out<\/a><\/strong>, or in-game, you&#8217;re not feeling as explosive or lethal as you felt you had been trending. Sometimes, this is just going to be a bit of fatigue after a lot of heavy training or marathon game sessions, it can be that adjustment period after changing up some critical settings, or it can be that regular variance that comes from the human element day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key with performance valleys is that they&#8217;re usually connected to something&#8230; whether it&#8217;s some recent change, a new focus, heavier training, or external sources of stress that are leading to crummy sleep or your overall mental. Once you&#8217;re able to identify the cause, though, you have narrowed it down to a valley and not a plateau. From here, patience and consistency will have a greater impact than a knee-jerk intervention. Usually, these situations resolve themselves within a short window of time if you maintain consistency in your process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-an-actual-plateau-look-like\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does an Actual Plateau Look Like?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A general plateau will have different identifiers and clues&#8230; First, it&#8217;s usually more of a sustained period of time, such as several weeks instead of a handful of days, in which you are not seeing any measurable improvement in spite of varied practice. Nothing major has changed, you&#8217;re not tired, and you haven&#8217;t made any dramatic changes&#8230; things just stop clicking, and you find yourself stuck. Worse still, it doesn&#8217;t feel like it&#8217;s going anywhere on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, plateaus are caused by your training routine becoming stagnant, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aimlabs.com\/articles\/aimlabs\/getting-better-at-tasks-is-not-the-same-as-getting-better-at-aim\/\">failing to challenge you and keep you in that learning window<\/a><\/strong>. You&#8217;ve become a bit too comfortable with your training process, you&#8217;re not pushing yourself, and your progress suffers. You may even still be putting up consistent numbers, but the momentum has fallen off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-wrong-way-to-respond-to-either\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Wrong Way to Respond to Either<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s where the problem comes in. A lot of players tend to respond to both situations with the same thing. They either <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aimlabs.com\/articles\/aimlabs\/understanding-why-grinding-deathmatch-will-not-fix-your-aim\/\">strap in and grind harder<\/a><\/strong>, stacking reps on reps while running the risk of burning themselves out, or they get discouraged and check out completely. Believe it or not, these can both be pretty detrimental to your progress and exacerbate the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply putting your head down and trying to grind through it is rough because it&#8217;s just adding fatigue to everything else. Taking a step back or giving up will also compromise your training, as it&#8217;s giving up rather than seeking the actual solution. When you can actually diagnose the situation, you can break down what to do to make the adjustments, making the necessary changes to address the issues that put you into this position in the first place. That diagnosis is the key, though, as understanding the cause of a problem is the only way to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aimlabs.com\/articles\/aimlabs\/when-your-aim-training-hits-a-plateau\/\">truly figure out how to fix it once and for all<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hitting a wall in your training?
