Marvel Rivals Season 9 Comes With Big Changes

Marvel Rivals Season 9 is live! Here's everything you need to know about the new Team-Up system, Black Widow's rework, and more!

Marvel Rivals 9th season, The Mystery of Thebes, is live as of today, and this is more than some balance changes and a new hero, NetEase has made some of the most significant changes to the game since it launched in late 2024.

Yes, Season 9 brings X-woman Jubilee to the strategist lineup, with The Hood coming in 9.5, but it also introduced a massive overhaul to the Team-Up system, a Black Widow rework, regenerative shields to dive heroes, and a global nerf to ult generation. Let’s dive into some of the changes so you can get a better idea of how Marvel Rivals is going to handle a bit differently moving forward.

The Team-Up System Is Completely Different Now

The previous Team-Up system that we’ve known since the earlier beta tests of Marvel Rivals featured specific hero pairings or groupings to be active, meaning that if a Team-Up included Magneto and Scarlet Witch, you would need both active on your team to enjoy the benefits. The system also featured an “Anchor” role, in which one character would be a Team-Up’s anchor, receiving a passive bonus such as additional health. That’s gone now, and the symmetry between Team-Ups is also gone.

With the new system, every hero has two Team-Ups, and those might not work both ways. For example, while Hulk has Team-Ups with Captain America and Wolverine, Cap’s Team-Ups are with Thor and Winter Soldier, and Wolverine’s Team-Ups are with Gambit and Cyclops.

More importantly, Team-Ups no longer require the other player to be actively on your team, however, the Team-Ups receive added features or benefits when the Team-Up partner is an active teammate. An example of this would be Namor’s Team-Up with Hulk, which brings back the Gamma Monstro ability, which is an additional Namor turret. When Hulk is on the team, Namor’s Blessing of the Deep ability also factors into the Team-Up, as using it accelerates the Gamma Monstro cooldown, while also adding a damage boost.

The last key change is that these Team-Ups is the ability to choose which Team-Up is active leading into the match, as well as the ability to swap it out in your spawn room. This means you can adjust and tailor your approach based on your teammates or whatever would be most beneficial in the moment.

The NetEase team explained that they felt the previous Team-Up system had become a bit of a drag on them and had also led to uninspired designs. They expect the new system to lead to fewer changes and swaps season to season, so hopefully, we won’t see our favorite Team-Ups vanish after a few months!

The Regenerative Shield

This one is particularly controversial, especially for the strategist mains out there… but the high mobility or “dive” based characters in Marvel Rivals are experiencing some changes to their HP that can change the flow of gameplay. Portions of these heroes’ base health have been replaced, now featuring a Regenerative Shield which will automatically regenerate once the player has been out of combat for five seconds.

The heroes receiving the regenerative shields are Angela, Hulk, Rogue, Thor, Venom, Black Cat, Black Panther, Daredevil, Magik, Psylock, Spider-Man, and Star-Lord.

So, what does this mean for everyone else? Well, on the plus side, perhaps this will lead to fewer Spider-mains sitting in a side hall on the map spamming heal requests, but on the other hand, it may just turn divers into peskier, self-sustaining backline harassers than ever before. We’ll have to wait and see!

Ultimates Are Slower Across the Board

One major complaint you’ll see about Marvel Rivals is that the game relies too heavily on ults for big plays, with the rest of the gameplay simply being a waiting game for ults to charge. NetEase is working to tweak this and has reduced the ultimate energy generation rate for all three roles. Strategists will see both their heal and damage conversion rates dropped, which is expected to slow ults down by about a fifth of their previous charge speed.

The Long-Awaited Black Widow Rework

While the few, the proud, the Widow mains, are upset with these changes, the overall consensus is that the Black Widow rework is long overdue. Historically, BW has consistently been one of the worst-performing and least-picked heroes in the game, and while a handful of players can always be exceptions to the rule, this just isn’t a healthy place for a hero to be in, so NetEase has taken a swing to change her up.

The new Black Widow now focuses more on her hipfire, which has been changed to full auto, while her ultimate puts her into a sniper mode with bullets that can pierce multiple enemies. They’re attempting to give Widow more flexibility in her duelist role, rather than being locked in sniper jail. Let’s see if the changes worked…

The Bottom Line

Season 9 could end up being an extremely pivotal point for Marvel Rivals. These are big swings, with major potential ramifications for the overall meta of Rivals. Sure, new heroes can always shake things up, and some balance adjustments can always change the popular metas that dominate a hero shooter, but these changes are sure to make an impact. The jury is out on how big an impact that is and how much players enjoy the changes. What do you think?
